The day the moon covered the sun
“When the moon covers the sun,” sounds like a tittle of song -It is called the total eclipse
and I got to see this happen on August 21 2017. I reside in Michigan and with that, I experience just a part of it covered unlike some parts which saw a full cover of the sun by the moon. For about forty minutes, Americans came out of their houses ,work and cars to see the incredible activity that may happen next in years to come. This was a historic moment that I got to partake as well.
The forty minute activity reminded me the words of the Psalmist often used to describe beauty,
The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to days out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge .There is no speech, nor there words, whose voice is not heard. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
The psalmist tells us that this is what the heavens were created to do- declare the glory of their creator. Creation is beautiful precisely because its creator is beautiful. God defines beauty by His very essence. God’s beauty is divine, eternal and infinite. He is beautiful. He has always been and eternally will be.
On this day, everyone came out to see the eclipse. We seek out these expressions of beauty because what we can see and comprehend draws us to wonder, “too awesome not to enjoy”. I was chatting with a fellow observer and we both realized we cannot comprehend or explain the eclipse entirely, but we could just imagine God’s attributes and beauty in creation. He is more than we can ever know and beyond our capacity to absorb.
so today, for about one hour, God showed off and it was beautiful.
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.
