Faith, Flight & Family — A Life of Purpose

Stories and reflections on following God

In my previous post, I mentioned using a GPS while flying a plane. Yes, if you know me well, you know how much I love flying.

There is something wonderful about leaving the ground and seeing the world from above. But before that moment comes preparation: planning the flight, checking the weather, gathering my headset and logbook, and making sure the aircraft is ready.

I had amazing instructors who patiently walked me through each step. One lesson became clear early on: flying requires preparation, attention, and a willingness to listen.

At the airport where I trained, I also needed clearance from the control tower before taking off.

Somebody say, “Control tower!”

Turn to your neighbour and tell them, “Control tower!”

It amazes me how ordinary experiences can give us new ways to think about our relationship with God.

A friend and I would sometimes visit the tower while waiting for the aircraft we were going to use to return. From there, we watched controllers coordinate aircraft movements, give instructions, and help keep traffic safely separated.

From the flight deck, I could see what was around me. The controllers had a broader picture of the traffic and activity beyond my immediate view. Their instructions mattered, even when I could not yet see the reason for them.

That experience makes me think about trusting God.

There are times when we can see only what is directly in front of us: a decision, a disappointment, a closed door, or a plan that has not worked out. We want to move forward, but we do not know what lies ahead.

God sees beyond our view. He knows the circumstances we have not encountered and the things we do not yet understand. We can bring Him our uncertainty and trust Him to guide us through it.

Sometimes the hardest instruction to receive is “Wait.”

When you are ready to take off, waiting can feel like wasted time. Yet at an airport, a delay may serve a purpose the pilot cannot immediately see. That has challenged me to be more patient with the unanswered questions in my own life. I may not understand the timing, but I can keep seeking God while I wait.

And when life becomes overwhelming, when all we can manage is a desperate “Mayday!”—we can call out to Him. We do not need polished words to ask for help.

So how do we stay attentive to His guidance?

We pray honestly. We spend time in His Word. We listen, seek wise counsel, and act on what He has already shown us. Little by little, we learn to trust Him with the next step.

Faith does not mean every flight will be smooth. There will still be turbulence, changes of course, and moments when we feel afraid. But we can turn to God in each of them.

My prayer is that we will make room to hear Him amid all the other voices competing for our attention, and have the courage to follow where He leads.

Put on your headset. Stay connected. You do not have to navigate this journey alone.
